Is there a principle or any literature on creating a general browser plugin (not like a firebug with a scattered installation for everyone, but like, for example, Flash Player. Does it throw any libraries into the root)?

On IE, ActiveX is used, on the rest (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera) - NPAPI. To create something cross-browser, you can take FireBreath .
