Actually, the question is simple and complex at the same time: how do you think the degree of IT degree is needed? He graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Tauride National University named after VI. Vernadsky

Got a master of computer science. Specialty is a programmer-mathematician, teacher of mathematics. A diploma, I must say, is quoted everywhere.

Academic work, you have to admit, we have turned into a devil knows what. But the Ukrainian state, science as such is not needed at all.

In thoughts that in the future the PhD degree can give ...

Closed due to the fact that it is necessary to reformulate the question so that it is possible to give an objectively correct answer by Nicolas Chabanovsky ♦ Aug 17 '16 at 15:43 .

The question gives rise to endless debates and discussions based not on knowledge, but on opinions. To get an answer, rephrase your question so that it can be given an unambiguously correct answer, or delete the question altogether. If the question can be reformulated according to the rules set out in the certificate , edit it .

@ Master DobrykhDell, in addition for the title is nothing good. IMHO degree should be obtained in a natural way. (Of course, this is ideally, in real life, the process is different.) For example, you really are interested in some field of research. You want to understand it more deeply and enter graduate school. There you study and perform some development. If you get a nontrivial result, then make it out and get a degree. Another option (closer to life, but rare) - by the totality of work. This is when you do not write a dissert, but just everyone acknowledged your contribution. - avp

In general, the crust is of two types - actually a piece of paper and knowledge that is in my head. It rarely happens that one corresponds to another. I met a lot of smart people who do not need a cool piece of paper. They already have a good job. And I met people with doctoral papers, but the knowledge was zero.

Based on this. A cool piece of paper might help in the first few days if you get a job. And then you will need knowledge. Equivalent knowledge Higher education programmer need. But the crust ... except to simplify some public doors.

  • I agree with all the points. He always held the opinion that it is more important that a person really knows how, and not specifically his number of crusts on the shelf and diplomas / certificates on the wall. Just a couple of clarifications: 1. This is not about Higher Education, but about Postgraduate, Ph.D. work and obtaining a PhD degree () 2. Knowledge gained in the process of research, writing a dissertation and its defense, as a rule, is purely theoretical (!). And little applicable in future work. In my situation, they are doubly applicable, because specialty "Theoretical computer science and cybernetics". - Master DobrykhDell
  • Will check compliance skills and described in the summary of mastered technologies. Having your status will give a good recommendation in any case - alex91
  • Acquaintances said that employers are also being led to a “crust” from the transition :) Nobody will check whether you studied or not. - lampa
  • Navalny was supposed to be checked, but that's another story) - alex91
  • @lampa, in serious companies check. - skegg

The question is: what for?

If in order to become a class expert in application programming and make a career in large companies, it is not necessary. VO is just enough. Although in other cases, the degree can help with employment. I had a familiar aviation engineer, not even a programmer or a mathematician. But after receiving his degree of candidate. technicians immediately took him as a programmer at Sheremetyevo, almost out of competition. Then, of course, he had to learn a lot. So the degree does not hurt, but there is no special need for it.

If you want to do exactly an academic career, do science, if you have such opportunities and desire, then a degree is necessary.

Then decide for yourself.

Mathematicians honor and respect! Especially those at the forefront of Science. Do not interfere with mathematics, of course. And sometimes it will help a lot. For example, knowledge of λ-calculus in Haskell programming (there are even about 8 vacancies for a Haskell programmer position). Another question is that the thinking of mathematics and the thinking of a programmer are not the same, the mathematician often aims to solve a problem, but the programmer looks for an algorithm to solve a problem. The mathematician is more concentrated, and the programmer is more lazy, because the computer solves the problem. The mathematician is more rigorous in reasoning, the programmer more (than the mathematician) trusts intuition (sometimes even too), and the programming language most often lacks expressive possibilities for rigorous proof of the correctness of the code.

Being lazy is not a required quality programmer. He can be hardworking, his research in simplification can be based not on laziness, but on the desire to optimize, speed up. - alex91
    • in fact, the following follows from the above - a programmer needs a good mathematical basis, at least for self-organization - every kind of matan is able to organize the brains well - DreamChild

laziness is the engine of progress, as is known. yes, matan improves the programmer's brain, but the opposite is true - programming is useful math IMHO - asianirish

Began to read the question, I thought that again the question is in style, does the VO need a programmer :)
I think this will play a role, but only in large companies. There will be a competition for a position of some kind, it can play, of course, all other things being equal, you and your opponents have arguments.

    • There is even more likely not a question, but a discussion with comments. The need for HE, its quality and content is generally a separate sensitive issue for the CIS countries. VO is needed for almost any modern person (including a programmer))), if it does not go to the detriment of really useful, practical knowledge, experience, skills, etc. Well, and in the end, health ... - Master DobryhDeil
    • Health sits down (about sore: there is a day and 3 lectures in it ~ 5 hours to sit - this is possible, but we need normal chairs, as it is equipped at work). For other knowledge, there seems to be no harm if study doesn’t completely kill personal time. And in essence, to get the most benefit from this status, we need a large company. Everyone will be pleased to have such an employee at home, but only major players will be ready to pay extra (and take into account). This is my subjective opinion, I can be wrong :) - alex91

I sit learning programming from triggers to neural networks ... I sit myself quietly studying the chenit do ... and then I looked around, but it turns out that people with a degree come up and ask for advice .... I’m thinking I’ll go open a company for my wife and I will build ....

    • "The more you study, the less you know" © Now I'm interested in the Ether wind .. I advise the most interesting topic. And the more mysteries we study, really, the more questions we get in response. : -] - BiMaWa
    • @Bimawa> "The more you study, the less you know," you wrote wrong ..., The more you study, the more you don't know , because studying does not reduce the amount of knowledge, but increases the boundaries of "ignorance". - IVsevolod
