If we are talking about common sense, then first it is worth understanding what should be done after all. For the two cases described for comparison lead to completely different results.

And if on the question posed, then everything will depend on the implementation. Conceptually, the first option will work faster, if only because the request will not be executed for the entire page (and how many requests from this page are still unknown), but only for one image.
