I mean self-esteem, and not an evaluation from the side, when the management, comparing the metrics of one programmer with another, does try to make a conclusion about who is more productive. It is intuitively clear that, for example, it worked well yesterday, and today it does not work very well. And if so, you can look at the metrics, understand that the work does not go well and either take a break or switch to another task. Does this make sense?

Now I am just reading the wonderful Peopleware book ...
I think you wrote correctly: “It is intuitively clear that, for example, yesterday it worked well, but today it does not work very well.” Isn't that enough to conclude? The real numerical performance evaluation is needed for reporting - this is bureaucracy. And when for himself, it is enough internal sensations.

Why, there is meaning. But not to prioritize - it is really better to leave at the mercy of intuition. And, for example, in order to learn in the future to more accurately estimate the time and scope of work. I really do not really imagine what kind of metrics we are talking about :)
