In an organization of 70 computers. There may be the following difficulties:

  • Lack of tools (screwdrivers, crimping pliers, lan tester, stationery knives, tape, etc.)
  • The problem of network installation (must be carried out at high altitude, it is necessary to pass through a huge wall, it is impossible to fix sockets, poorly compressed cable, cable not compressed according to the standard, EM cable crosstalk, etc.)
  • Faulty equipment
  • Lack of documentation on the work performed and the structure of the LAN
  • No database server accounts (Active Directory, Open LDAP, others)
  • Security holes (not conducting software update procedures, weak passwords, use of administrator / administrator account, lack of access rules for a shared resource, lack of antivirus, lack of HIPS, etc.)
  • Lack of experience with Windows / Linux
  • Lack of reliability improvement systems (RAID, disabled recovery system, etc.)
  • Building a system without a plan
  • Problems connecting SMB clients
  • Network setup issues
  • Many more possible pitfalls

Are there any tips experienced?

  • Plan
  • Record changes
  • Save articles you are customizing.
  • Store distributions / drivers on network storage
  • Have a service USB flash drive / external drive
  • Have all the necessary tools (including do not think that the lan-tester is overkill)
  • Keep a first aid kit
  • Have a computer with internet access
  • Use only licensed or free software.
  • Ask questions on this project.

I hope everything is painted enough)

    Previous posts quite answer the question, but I venture to add three pennies.

    • I repeat once again, document your actions and everything that you learn about your network. The form of the documentation is not important, it is important that you and / or any other person in your place can quickly find the necessary information in it. And lead her always;
    • When solving a problem, always consider rolling back to the original (previous) position and take your time;
    • When solving a problem, always go through the options, starting with the simplest, even the most trivial ones;
    • If possible, standardize the software on the network hosts;
    • If possible, get rid of services tied to users' computers (shared printers, folders, etc.), restrict user rights to the necessary and sufficient level. However, without fanaticism! If the security level set by you will constantly annoy the user, sooner or later he will find a way to bypass it. In my opinion, this is worse than its insufficient level, but observed by the user;
    • Read the documentation.

      Usually the duties of the administrator of the park of work stations include

      • work with user accounts,
      • system security (antivirus, access rights ...),
      • data backup (images for filling, data repositories ...),
      • software and hardware updates (system updates, new memory ...),
      • as well as repair and adjustment if necessary.

      Accordingly, what difficulties may arise? Any related to the above tasks, namely:

      • lack of knowledge and experience (Linux administration, with experience with Windows),
      • the inability to ask a senior friend (he is not there, he is on vacation, he is sick, etc.),
      • lack of funds (you need to buy something, but do not give money),
      • system crash in the absence of the administrator at work (went to bed, everything broke),
      • etc.

        If everything is set up correctly at once, then there are almost no problems. Sometimes they arise when sharing a file, for example, when one user forgot to close it, and another tries to rename the folder where this file is located (this is from my personal practice). And the file is on a server, shared. I immediately refused the cache, it was they who were even more confused there.

          Yes, in principle, no difficulties. Create two accounts fdmin and yuser. Put the password on the admin, which you will only know, and let users work through the user account, because there is such a problem with them - they love to delete files that are very important, they can delete the Windows system files (and this is already considered mistake, and reinstall not hunting). Also put them antivirus for flash drives, so that the viruses did not drive there. I also work at the company, here are 58 computers, I did everything as I wrote to you and I can say nothing I do all day, I sit in social networks.
