By machine, one partition (ext4), where everything is installed. Periodically made backup data folders

tar -cvjf папка.tar.bz2 папкаmv папка.tar.bz2 флэшка

Recently, the system flew. And I had to reinstall and reconfigure everything, not just the data. How best to keep a solid image of a live system, including the boot server, and so on. about how in ghost does windows?

For a full copy of the entire disk or the necessary partitions, the dd command is suitable. To reduce the final archive size, it is better to fill the empty space with zeros.

     sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/root/zero bs=4M

    and then

     sudo dd if=/dev/sdXY bs=1M conv=noerror | gzip -c > /mnt/backup/root.dd.gz

    More: system backup .

rsync, tar I made a copy, but I did not have to restore it from the archive, I think it will work, but it’s better to clarify.
