I asked three questions on Linux. The husband has already done all this (what was advised). But still we can not update the browser (we have Mozilla 2.0 by default) and flash player (version 9). With old versions already in Odnoklassniki I can neither read anything, nor write messages. The system writes to update everything (see above), since the versions are old. 2009 netbook release. All other functions (except the Internet) work just fine. Maybe we have a stripped-down version of Debian Linux, so nothing can be done ??? Tried to install from a Linux-Slax flash drive. Everything turned out, except for the connection with the modem. They did all the operations that their friends suggested, nothing comes out. On the modem, the Lompochka Link is lit, and Ethernet (that is, the connection of the netbook and the modem) is not.
- Tell us step by step how are you trying to update your browser and flash player? At the same time I would like to know the OS version and model of the netbook. Well, why are you trying to install Linux? Maybe in windows you would be easier? - sergarcada
- Linux Debian GNU / Linux 4.0 \ n \ l. This is about the system. Model netbook Eee PC. And we are not trying to install Linux, it is by default initially. We tried to install a flash player, but in this version of Linux there are no rpm packages. Apparently, because of this, it is not possible to update everything. If you can, then tell me where they can be stored? - simfoniay
- A little off topic, but Chrome on off.site can be downloaded, in one click - user20984

Absolutely right, Demian is * .deb-packages. There is, of course, the ability to "convert" packages, but, IMHO, not for your case. Common packages are in all versions.
You must use the package manager apt-get or aptitude. Go here: APT package manager or package management .
As I understood from this phrase: "Direct updates from Debian releases older than 5.0 (lenny) are not supported." Those. update via apt to the new version of the system will not work. Output: either download the packages and install them from your computer (but dependencies may pop up here), or you need to download the latest distribution and update from the bootable CD / DVD.
- Thank. We will try. Yesterday evening my husband got to something. True, I do not know what it is. He has to master Linux, since it works on XP. So thanks for the advice. - simfoniay
- The whole feature of Linux compared to WXP is that you should carefully read the instructions. At one time was in the same situation. So good luck to you. - Justicet
Debian understands * .deb, RPM packages you don’t put on it, maybe this is the problem?
- Thank you very much. Yesterday, my husband, somehow, “reached” himself. So, we are moving in the right direction. - simfoniay
and Ethernet (i.e., netbook and modem connection) is not.
Check the cable from the computer to the modem
You need to remove the old version and add repositories for new versions.
Another advice, if you want to use the new distribution, it is better to demolish and put it from scratch - it will be better !! Right now my Ubuntu 11.10 works stably, it seems you can even compare it with 10.04 !!
Here is the instruction .
