Hello.

There is a laptop 5 years old release. Model - Asus A6Jc. 2 cores, 2 gigabytes, IDE screw per 100 gigs, nVidia video embedded.

There has long been a desire to install Linux on it. I tried Ubuntu - it slows down (I tried it because it's heard). I tried Sousa - it does not work at high quality, sometimes it hangs (I chose it because it seems to be the best way for notebooks). And in the first and second version of the schedule slows down even with the usual office mode. Tell me, please, maybe there are any other Linux distributions for this configuration laptop? Windows XP just flies. But free software normally refuses to work .. = (

Thank you in advance.

Commercial driver on the video did not try to install?

    • Excuse me, dear, but what does "commercial" mean? =) from the manufacturer? - Stoparik
    • they are the most! - e_klimin
    • =) thanks! I will try. =) - Stoparik

try linux mint with lxde on my netbook, nothing slows down, so there I have intel atom and gig RAM, although it seems to me that ubunta with lxde should work fine

    • With lxde, yes, I agree, it works well. I do not argue. =) but .. as if to say it, so that rotten tomatoes are not abandoned ... =))) like beautiful things. =) even though I put minimal beauty on the vents and translate the whole desktop into a classic, I’ll try to translate it into a classic. Maybe so go to lxde. =) - Stoparik

Try any of the lightweight distributions. I advise PuppyRus, a good Russified and friendly community :)

    • Yes, I agree that both easy and cute, it works smartly, well-built. I tried, I liked it very much. but. =) I did not like the installation on the screw. many things have to guess how to do. on the forum I am ashamed to ask questions ... =))) I used to do it myself. but now I don’t want to cut something myself. =) I want to put and forget. =) - Stoparik

If the pig flies, then the ubunt should not slow down. matter in the schedule. try lxde - a balance between functionality and ease, although I use fluxbox

    • I will try to install drivers from the manufacturer. and if it is stupid, you will have to use Puppy-com ... =) - Stoparik

My Acer Aspire 3680 (2004 release) feels great xUbuntu - Ubunt distribution for low-power machines.

    • OK. =) Thank you. But I did not hear about it. =) I'll try it with pleasure. =) True, I see they have 2 types of distributions: alternate and desktop. Which is more preferable? - Stoparik
    • Alternative is a possibility a la LiveCD with the subsequent installation, Desktop - installation from under BIOS in a text mode. - Realetive__

According to Wikipedia, “The main difference between Xubuntu and the basic version is the Xfce desktop environment. Most application software is also taken from this environment. ”But you would like not to use a simple working environment (lxde). May, of course, Xfce be better than lxde. And so - in fact, you have already made xubuntu for yourself, if you put lxde .. well, more precisely, “lubuntu” some;)

Try knoppix. You can work as with the live version, and then install it. There will be no problems on your configuration.

      • Knoppix tried once, about 10 years ago. =) but it seemed to me that this is a pure Linux linux for emergency use. I use PuppyRus this way. =) Now I try xUbuntu. =) - Stoparik

hp compaq 6720s dual core. 1 gig of RAM, built-in intel. Ubuntu 11.10 Unity works fine. It slows down when copying, and so everything is with a bang, there is no super surfing, there is not much to watch a movie and to work in the console too many resources. I manage to start the virtual machine with xp for some needs. You will have a laptop, lxde fsce set it, I thought it would be faster, but not ..... In the extreme case of gnome-fallback-session.

      • =) thanks, dear. I will try. =) xUbuntu 11.10 works fine, pretty fast. but, as I understand it, you still have to finish the little things anyway ... the drivers for the video will definitely be set up from offsite. - Stoparik
