There is an old computer Pentium III, 600 MHz with USB ports still 1.0. I took a new 16GB Transcend USB flash drive. Do not want to see her this old computer!

He sees other flash drives (for 2 and 8 GB).

Maybe the flash drive is not working? I checked this flash drive on another, new computer - it works. I recorded a movie on it, put it in a DVD player — it shows a movie player, it sees a flash drive.

Here is a mystery. Maybe especially old computers do not see flash drives larger than 8 GB? I remember a friend had a similar problem. We met in the city and he wanted to show me the photos from the flash drive immediately. And he also had a new 16 GB flash drive. We decided to go to the Internet club, take a computer. And there was an old computer too. And now he does not see a completely normal, working flash drive, and that's it! What could it be?

  • What is the operating system on the patient and what kind of flash drive (manufacturer)? - timmer
  • Operating system Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. Transcend JetFlash 300 flash drive with 16 GB capacity. - Nikolja
  • Tried to connect to all usb-ports? (I understand, the question borders on idiocy, but this also happened in practice)) - timmer
  • The question is NORMAL! Not idiotic at all:) No, not to all ports. To one. BUT (!) I successfully connected other THREE different flash drives of lesser capacity to this same USB port many times. In older computers, USB connectors are only at the back, which is inconvenient. Therefore, I have a USB extension cable inserted there, which some people call a "pigtail". In this extension cord and always insert the flash drive. I will try other ports (it became curious!) And accomplish your goal. * * * * * * * I tried it! Uselessly. Either does not see the flash drive at all, or still sees that a removable disk is inserted, but if you open the Properties, then the computer does not see anything. - Nikolja
  • If you select "Format", it does not respond. And on another computer, I just reformatted this flash drive to an old proven FAT32 just in case. But no :). In the old computer it writes (if it is possible to open the "Properties" of this flash drive) that the file system: is not defined. - Nikolja

You yourself answered your question.

  • And why doesn't the old computer see this flash drive? I already bought another 8 GB flash drive on Silicon Power Helios 101. It works fine! - Nikolja
  • If you want to get to the bottom of the truth, then let's dance from what mother, on which chipset, more information. And now it turns out that the mother is particularly budgetary and the manufacturer did not at all stipulate that there (in USB) more than 1 Gb will be allowed to fuck. - gurzufnet

See USB interface, your computer has USB 1.0, and the USB flash drive 2.0, that’s ( not ) working.

  • IMHO, it does not depend on the interface (USB 1.0 / 2.0). Otherwise, the USB 3.0 devices would not work on the USB 2.0 port, which is not observed) - timmer

In my opinion, it is easier to buy a USB 2.0 PCI-card in order to eliminate such problems for the future.

  • from the TS comment: "I have already bought another 8 GB flash drive on Silicon Power Helios 101. It works fine." So the matter is hardly in the interface. - timmer pm
  • I just had a suspicion that the ports on the mother might not pull on the power supply. Although this is only a hypothesis. Without seeing the vehicle, I can not say. - caustikk

@tolan right, @Nikolja , do you have a usb 2 flash drive? usb 3?

PS:USB 3.0 поддерживается не всеми операционными системами. В первую очередь это касается Windows XP.
  • So ... I look at the packaging from the flash drive :-). The Chinese "write" that the Connection Interface: USB 2.0 - Nikolja
  • I said above> If you want to get to the bottom of the truth, then let's dance from what mother, on which chipset, more information - gurzufnet
  • :) And how can you independently determine which motherboard and chipset? - Nikolja
  • Try hwinfo.com , if linux, then hwinfo command - gurzufnet
  • Thanks for the advice! Hwinfo gives the following information: Motherboard ABIT i815E-W83627HF; chipset Intel 815EP (Solano-3) + ICH2 - Nikolja

See in ESCD (table after POST) whether the name and model of the flash drive is determined. If you do not have time to see, set the boot device boot from something left (LS-120, for example). If it determines, return the settings and try to download firewood (fact! I have a Transcend JetFlash D133193 8Gb, the same problems). If it does not determine - well, not destiny ...

Launch Linux liveCD and try to connect a USB flash drive. They also have tools for working with hdd for flash drives, too, should come up. If it works, we will think further.
