Good day.

There is a task: a server (RHEL) and several counters (~ 4000). The meters are far away and there is a task to put the routers there and raise the VPN tunnel from the server to the counters so that they can be polled by timer.

Question: what are the possible implementations? and what routers or firmware to them can VPN over the Internet connection?

Routerboard + Mikrotik same. You can raise VPN-over-Ethernet-over-PPP-over- <whatever you want>.

PS: why the tunnel To the counters and not vice versa?

    • The VPN server is naturally my server, and routers are clients. Did everything on DD-WRT. It works for itself :) - Fe1iX

My opinion is that the counters should be able to connect via the encrypted protocol to the server (TLS) over public IP (port forwarding, NAT?) And merge information there. VPN in this case is overkill and an extra way to earn yourself trouble out of the blue.

Therefore, the answer - use the right software for monitoring.
