I need to read a book, but I have already found three editions. All three books have the same cover, but a slightly different title and each edition has a different year of release. And I do not know what I need, because I do not know what these EDITIONS mean. What are editions? The first, second, third ...?

@shatal , this is a revision of the text itself, something like an update to the software - closing old errors and introducing additions / changes taking into account the current state of affairs. The later edition, the more modern the text.

@shata , as you already correctly noted @etki , but he forgot to mention that new editions, like software, may carry new errors! I would recommend you keep a few books. To read, of course, a new one, but if something becomes incomprehensible, then turn to earlier publishers. The fact is that any author tries, in his opinion, more successful formulations of certain concepts to convey to the reader, but it happens that he fails.
