As usual, I performed software updates through the update manager. I restarted the computer and I do not see the top bar above each window, with which you can move the window, minimize, close or expand. Having climbed the settings, I realized that some window manager was not running.

In the console, I started startx and xinit, but they both answered "user XA, aborting".

In general, I do not know how to be, the windows are small, I barely squeezed my message here. Help me please.

you need to start the metacity , if this is gnome 2 - Vladimir Gordeev
  • Perhaps compiz fell off. He is a window decorator, i.e. It is he who draws the title bar of windows and other things. But without it, the system is functional and the graphics mode works. I was helped by turning off / on desktop effects - gecube
  • The solution with metacity helped, but that's not the order, I delete the console and everything returns to its former places. I have a ubuntu 10.10 I work from a netbook, and the visual effects on it are not applicable. and what kind of desktop effects? - lap top
  • How did you launch metacity from gnome-terminal? and which team? - skegg

Try running like this:

 nohup metacity

First, startx must be run as the superuser (root). And secondly, since you don’t have a bare console, you still have some windows, most likely X is running, but GDM for some reason didn’t start. Try this:

sudo killall Xorg gdm sudo gdm
    • Result and result: ** (gdm-binary: 3055): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager ** (gdm-binary: 3055): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out ie also left itself - lap top
