The fonts and design of some applications have flown in ubuntu 14.04.
For example:
Atom file save dialog:

Appearance of the menu and tabs in Firefox:

Before the last system reboot, I set up the colors of the directories displayed by ls in the terminal (by analogy with this answer on ubuntuforums.org)
Hardly it is somehow connected, but just in case, rolled back the changes did not help.

How to restore default design and fonts?

PS Also, at the same time with this problem, the following appeared (it can help with identifying the cause):
1. After logging in, the mouse does not work for about 5 minutes, then it starts working.
2. The keyboard works, but ctrl + shift + t also does not work for about 5 minutes.

  • I noticed that after the mouse started working, restarting unity, the setsid unity command solves the problem. I will understand why the mouse does not work when it starts ... - Anton Novik
  • The problem was the following: when starting the system, there was a problem of initializing USB devices (the keyboard worked fine because PS / 2), dug the Internet for a long time, trying to figure out the problem, eventually turned off the computer for a while. After that, when the system started, there were no problems with USB, and the design of the windows (for example, firefox) was normal. Apparently when errors occurred with USB, there were no any commands / scripts at startup related to the work of unity. - Anton Novik

unity-tweak-tool allows you to switch themes. I advise you to try. Mmmm ... try to roll back the x-server to the old version.

I was helped by the team

     setsid unity
