After booting the system there are no icons on the desktop, and also if I open a terminal, it opens, but with such a bug. terminal error

Also, there are suspensions when trying to work with the "Update Manager", does not open the "Application Sources". Most likely, this happened due to the addition of the xorg repository and the driver update to the video. I did nothing more critical.

None of the tips, neither here nor on other sites solved the problem. But the problem was solved, complete removal of almost everything that is possible. Everything that had to do with X, Cinnamon, MDM (Mint Display Manager), along with them were removed all sorts of related packages and dependencies. Then the default Minta repository was restored and everything was installed anew! Everything works perfectly!

The problem, initially, was after upgrading the kernel to 4.4.0-040400rc7-generic SMP Mon Dec 28 and installing a number of drivers on the video. What exactly, I do not know, because Ix dropped after a reboot, after a couple of days.

You could not remove cinnamon and mdm. Only X's. - handicraftsman
  • I tried differently, and tried everything individually and in groups. I do not exclude that when I deleted it separately, I could have missed something. But it was a complete demolition of the net of everything, restoring the repository and installing from scratch solved the problem. - 5m1t

Try this:

apt-get purge xorg* apt-get install xorg apt-get purge xserver* apt-get install xserver*
  • Did not help. Here is an identical, by problems, situation. mintlinux.ru/forum/thread8859.html , but I do not have nvidia drivers. - 5m1t
  • Then I think it's easier to reinstall fully if there is no experience in setting up X's manually. general algorithm, if not mistaken: - user197988
  • Then I think it's easier to reinstall fully if there is no experience in setting up X's manually. general algorithm, if not mistaken: setting X -> setting Cinnamon -> installing the video card driver ... the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package should be enough for nvidia to work. What exactly is the error? x errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log - user197988
  • You can use this avreg.net/howto_x-org-server.html guide. first install the bare x # aptitude install xserver-xorg or # aptitude install x-window-system to check $ startx. then the nvidia drivers # aptitude install nvidia-kernel-dkms - user197988
