Where to find such projects so that you can participate in them as a programmer. I only know a little php and MySQL (I work in Linux Ubuntu 10.10). And what's stopping you to start your project? Come up with an idea and strive to realize it along the way learn a lot of things.

In Open Source, you road. Look for a project that is to your liking or really do something useful for the society itself; critics will get the sea both constructively and not so much.
