Transfer me to a new project. The architect said that it is necessary to unambiguously change the OS to a UNIX-like one, since it wouldn’t work for me the other way around.

As a typical Windows user, I tried to find out how to install Ubuntu. Faced with the fact that even the correct version has TLC or what it is properly called, as well as various variations. Also, I did not understand how to properly put it on a laptop in order to fully use it.

Can someone give a link to the resource where you can determine the desired edition of Ubuntu 14.04, and briefly describe what configuration is needed to start on this OS. The terms are very tight, and therefore there is no time to sort out books on * nix systems.

Briefly:

  1. Do not demolish Windows - this is not necessary. Make a dual block, for safety net. Free up space under the HDD section ~ 30 GB. When installing, Ubuntu will find a partition with Windows and add you a menu item in GRUB (bootloader).

  2. Choose DE . Ubuntu comes in several distributions with different DE. For the first time not to be confused in the global menu, take the classics: Xubuntu or Ubuntu Mate. Previews can be viewed on YouTube.

  3. Set the 16.04 . Formally, this is beta, but release in a week.

  4. In Linux, it is customary to install software from repositories. Official or third-party. Third-party repositories in Ubuntu are called PPAs. Java is installed from the PPA webupd8 :

Java installation:

sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:webupd8team/java sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends oracle-java6-installer oracle-java7-installer oracle-java8-installer sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends oracle-java8-set-default

After installation, look for them in /usr/lib/jvm

  1. In Linux, you may again face the question of choosing an IDE. Only Eclipse looks fine with GTK3 support disabled. For the rest, manipulations in the form of an openjdk-fontfix installation are required. If you are writing to NetBeans, I sympathize, nothing rescues it.

  2. Get to know Google: ubuntu + 3 words in English, describing the essence of the question, work wonders.

  3. You can still look here

In Ubuntu, even versions are stable, and odd versions are for development. Therefore, if you want to reduce the likelihood of encountering bugs, it is better to use stable versions with support for 5 years (they are called LTS distributions): the stable version is now 14.04 (2014 - year, 04 - release month), updates are released for it (close windows -analogy: service packs), which are numbered 14.04.X, the last 14.04.4 - it is better to take it.

In April 2016, a new stable release of April 16, 2016 (2016, April 04 - April) should be released - maybe it will suit you better, since laptops have problems with drivers, especially for video cards, if you encounter difficulties in installing a resolution, it is possible that this version has problems for your laptop will be solved. In addition, it is recommended to install proprietary drivers at least for a video card, if, of course, they are available (during installation or immediately after Ubuntu should offer this option).

In most cases, in Ubuntu everything should work out of the box, without additional configuration, if it does not work, you need more information about your hardware and the problems you encounter.

  • "in Ubuntu everything should work out of the box", but at the same time with every update I have a grub fly, so it’s better to put lts and not touch it until the cock bites)) or until the necessary experience is gained, because the problem is solved in a couple of minutes (if you know how to solve it) - BOPOH
  • @BOPOH, and what is your version? If sid , then of course, it will be unstable, given that it is recruited from Debian testing and unstable . - ߊߚߤߘ

Apparently, LTS is meant - a version with an extended support duration, read the release of updates. To date, there are two: 14.04.4 and recently released 16.04. Mined here, to Yandex often there is a fast channel: http://mirror.yandex.ru/ubuntu-releases/14.04.4/ http://mirror.yandex.ru/ubuntu-releases/16.04/ It will be launched and launched without any linux-specific knowledge. Documentation on specific issues is very sensible and a lot of it. In principle - Ubuntu is a good option to start with a low entry threshold.
