File extension - a thing invented very conditionally. Allows you to make "associations" to run a specific program. Microsoft popularized this very aggressively, as a single mandatory standard (although in fact it is not).

You can use any file names and their extensions. Simply, without specifying the "default program" for this extension, it will not be opened by the necessary application (conditionally by double-clicking).

Judging by the question "how?" - qt-creator automatically add its extension after creating the file? If this is the case, then you need to either find the corresponding item in the settings, or there is a drop-down list with extensions when choosing to save If there is no possibility to do either of these, then rename the file after saving with the tools of the operating system.

Just set the name of the file with the extension you need, that's all. Like a database, it can be in any file, with any extension. It is important how you handle this file :)

By the way, the same sqlite files were met in real programs as .sqlite (Mozilla), as .db (Far, Skype, Adobe), .db3 (Nokia Data Store), and even without the extension (Adobe Acrobat) :)
