A laptop with installed Windows 8 was purchased. No problem updated to Windows 8.1. When Window 10 came out, I waited a long time for it when I offer to upgrade. So I did not wait. Downloaded the installer to the USB flash drive from Microsoft. I start the installation, and she asks for a key. I enter the one that is from Windows 8, but it does not fit.

How to solve this problem?

You do not have a wired key for Windows 10. It is issued only when upgrading. You need to upgrade, and not install from the installer. Therefore, you need to reinstall the 8k, install all the updates and with them should come the update to 10k (most likely on the old 8k, something broke and the update did not come). A convenient installer for the correct version of 8k can be downloaded from Microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/ru-ru/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

    • Roll back to the factory state, to Win8. From the Mircosoft website I downloaded the "update" to Win10. Already 33%. The key does not ask. - MaximK
    • @MaximK is as it should be - the 8k key was sewn into the BIOS, so it does not ask for it. And for 10ki, the key has just been issued and embedded in the BIOS, or will be issued upon installation - Schullz
