This means that FileZilla recursively walks through folders, and adds their contents to the download queue.
In the "total size" field on the server, the total amount of files that are located in the current directory is displayed, excluding the files that are located in the child directories. The volume of all data together with directories, subdirectories, subdirectories ... can be much more than what FileZilla indicates.
