DELL Inspiron n5110 laptop. After installing Ubuntu (Gnome) happily greeted me with a black screen.

I checked the RAM (memtest), the hard disk (badblocks), started to sin on the video card.

I put the latest drivers up to date (nVidia GT 525M) and I was disappointed: NVIDIA X Server Settings does not see the monitor, I can’t set up any settings, although the nvidia card is activated.

I read the forums, manuals, solutions did not find. Maybe there are knowledgeable people ready to suggest what to do?

UPD. Those. When the free nouveau driver is installed, after installing gnome on a clean system, a black screen will pop out. Maybe the problem is not in the driver at all?

  • similar question: Ubuntu 16.04 + Nvidia Driver = Blank screen (KMS only appeared in the most recent nvidia drivers (364.12+), try setting nomodeset, as recommended in the link — the effect is that before launch X, the console resolution is small). For the future: it is better to check the compatibility of hardware before installation. - jfs
  • @jfs ATP for the link, now I will try. With Unity, there are no problems at all, the video is playing, I really haven't tried any games, but when I installed the gnome-shell and selected gdm after the reboot, the symptoms appeared. Therefore, there was a thought that the iron came together, especially since it is far from new and the driver is also not fresh, the latter on nVidia costs 367, and only 361 is available in turnips. - LivAlex
