I want to put the Users folder on a separate disk and attach it as an ntfs-folder instead of the original one. The question is, how good is this idea? Win7 and Win10.

The question arose because, theoretically, a similar result could be achieved with the help of symbolic links. However, I know of cases when some programs do not count symbolic links as folders and simply delete them, creating a new folder in their place. Will similar problems arise in the case of a disk?

In general, the point is to transfer user profiles to another physical disk.

in Windows, you simply change the path to the user's folder in the registry and that's it, no symlinks are needed, you don’t need to be mounted either. it was just that your user folder was in c: \ catham, d: \ cetat became - sobsoven for the seven, but it worked since the time of XP nextofwindows.com/… - strangeqargo
  • @strangeqargo, the system is not freshly installed, the heap of programs in the settings can be spelled out the old version. And a bunch can just hardcoding something. On transfer, google the options where it says after changing the registry to shovel the entire registry with replacing the old paths with new ones (and several times with a re-entry into the system until they run out and check hands, because utilities do not replace everything), or create symbolic links . - Qwertiy

You can easily check this by simply making a copy and changing the path, if it does not take off, return it back and try the symlinks. The maximum that can fall off, IMHO, is the path to the saved files (and that, hard-coded, and not tied to environment variables). I was so transferring folders and there were no terrible problems. Again, if you have all the modern software, then use the symlinks immediately, they should respect them - strangeqargo
  • Just yesterday, using the script, I dragged the restricted user folder onto the D: \ drive. And even before that, 10 computer classes with the 80th program also work with the transferred student profile, also on D: \ - and everything is smooth. Win7Pro. - don Rumata
  • Yes, all through robocopy and mklink. Listing can throw. - don Rumata
