In the project I am working on now, ALL images were placed by the previous developer in mipmap-xxxx. Only .xml files remain in the drawable.
It seemed to me that mipmap should be used only for application icons. Actually the question is how correctly to store ALL images in a mipmap or is it a mistake? It would be good, if possible, to use links to documentation in responses.

You correctly wrote that mipmap is usually used for application icons. mipmap appeared in android 4.3 Mipmapping for drawables . This article describes why it is better to use mipmap for icons. In short, when your icons are located in drawable - [разрешение] , you may have problems displaying icons of the wrong size.
