Installed Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS on an HP laptop. The Wi-Fi icon did not appear at the top of the Ubuntu Desktop. What to do?

Probably the driver is not installed. Try this:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hanipouspilot/rtlwifi sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install rtlwifi-new-dkms linux-firmwar
