I found the source of one site *a . What does it mean? What does the asterisk mean, * ?

Closed due to the fact that the essence of the question is incomprehensible by the participants Alexey Shimansky , user194374, Grundy , Alex , Vadim Ovchinnikov Jan 8 '17 at 5:44

Try to write more detailed questions. To get an answer, explain what exactly you see the problem, how to reproduce it, what you want to get as a result, etc. Give an example that clearly demonstrates the problem. If the question can be reformulated according to the rules set out in the certificate , edit it .

  • I'm pretty sure it's just a typo. There is a selector * , meaning "select all tags" (universal selector). There is a selector a , meaning "select all tags a ". A *a - this is not. - Vadim Ovchinnikov

    Drop the link to the W3C validator if you think this is valid. - Vadim Ovchinnikov
  • Well, I did not write the code, I just saw it in the source code and I myself want to understand why it is written this way - Max

    I am telling you that this is a typo. You argue that it works. Say: check out CSS. Did you do it? - Vadim Ovchinnikov
  • I already understood that it was not you who wrote it. - Vadim Ovchinnikov

  • I received the source code from the customer and there is this - Max
  • @Max No problem. I answered your question? - Vadim Ovchinnikov
  • Well then, what does this code mean * a {transition: color 0.2s, background-color 0.2s; -moz-transition: color 0.2s, background-color 0.2s; -webkit-transition: color 0.2s, background-color 0.2s; -o-transition: color 0.2s, background-color 0.2s; } - Max
  • Great, 1. Does it work? 2. Even if it works, it does not mean that it is valid, since browsers work differently with typos in HTML \ CSS. - Vadim Ovchinnikov
  • well yes. the site has no errors - Max

In general, you should look here .

Here is the code from the example for your question, for a general understanding of the question:

 [href*="htmlbook"] { background: yellow; /* Желтый цвет фона */ }
 <p><a href="http://www.htmlbook.ru/html/">Теги HTML</a> | <a href="http://stepbystep.htmlbook.ru">Шаг за шагом</a> | <a href="http://webimg.ru">Графика для Веб</a></p>

And the second example

 * { margin: 0; padding: 0; /* Убираем отступы и поля для всех элементов */ }
 <p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diem nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut lacreet dolore magna aliguam erat volutpat.</p>

    And how does your answer relate to the question? And here the attributes where you saw the square brackets in the question? - Vadim Ovchinnikov
  • Question about the system of stars in general. In two examples, you can easily understand that an asterisk means any elements. And it applies to all styles, as well as to individual elements, defining the variable part and the constant. - Alexey Giryayev
  • Well, about the asterisk sorted out. And the first part of the answer [href*="htmlbook"] to what? - Vadim Ovchinnikov
  • And this "Answers to such questions you can easily find in the network within 10 seconds." What is the information load? Hint that the author is near or just lazy and could find in 10 seconds? - Vadim Ovchinnikov
  • It is not known in what context he found this asterisk, therefore, and 2 examples. About 10 seconds, this is just a hint that the author of the question could quickly find the answer to the question through a search than to describe it here. - Alexey Giryayev

This is either a typo or a crutch for a particular browser. For example, old IEs ate an asterisk before the name of css-properties. Maybe for tags rolls - I do not know.

  • Can you give examples and specify which browsers are meant (old ones are a relative concept, preferably a version)? I just never saw the asterisks before the name of the properties, so it’s curious. - Vadim Ovchinnikov
  • @VadimOvchinnikov, like IE7-. The most classic *zoom: 1 . stackoverflow.com/q/14927651/4928642 - Qwertiy
