    For all of our projects we use EWWW Image Optimizer - it directly refers to server utilities for compression, can compress arbitrary folders, compress old pictures, work on the crown, set compression levels by file types, exclude sizes from compression - and much more. If you do not want to strain the server, you can use external resources like: Imagify or WP Smush - both have WordPress plugins.

    Not so long ago I had a similar question. After much research, my choice fell on the Compress JPEG & PNG plugin images . It is free, does not create server loads and compresses images better than other plugins.

    At the same time, compression occurs without loss of quality - unnecessary exif-data is deleted. The only drawback is the compression limit - "only" 500 images.
