What do they put (VPS or whatever) and what do the servers for Android-games write on? Is the connection maintained between the client and the server using sockets?

  • You can look towards Firebase. Popular thing now. - Kirill Malyshev

If the game is Tetris, and the server is only for achievements and analytics, then sockets are not needed, they only complicate, enough HTTP, on the PHP and MySQL server, it is possible at first even on a free hosting service, only to buy a domain so as not to "lose".
If the game is client-server, then yes, VPS and sockets, but HTTP Long-Polling can be dispensed with, since TCP will have a rather complicated algorithm if reliability is required when network “breaks”, etc., is hard for many.
UPD: there are still special services, though mostly only for specific tasks like analytics or push notifications, and not free (or with restrictions).
