Computer x86 compatible? There is a selection of micro distros , many of which fit in 8Mb of RAM, in particular Fd Linux based on Red Hat (8Mb RAM) or PiTux (4Mb RAM).

Fd Linux is a rather specific dist: there is a network, there is a bash, but there is no disk support. In PiTux, as you know, there are no disks or a network out of the box.
