I use the qTranslate plugin for a multilingual Wordpress site. Suppose there is an entry in one language (English), but if you choose Russian, it will inform you that there is a version in English only. You can make it so that there is a redirect to an accessible language, or simply gives 404 error.

In qTranslate, the multilingual mechanism is based on shortcodes. In fact, in one post content is written in all languages. Those in fact 404 can not be.
Polylang has a different mechanism - each language is in separate posts. Those. possible and 404.
