You can not do for this task only FTP access, you need access to the command line (SSH for dedicated servers or some kind of web panel).

In the console to pack your site:

tar -cvzf site_backup.tar.gz /home/clientid/websitefolder

After that, download the archive via FTP. Indeed, one large file downloads much faster than 18,000 small files.
