    If your computer is yours, install any simple linux configuration; best of all is the latest version of Ubuntu. This can be done from a DVD-drive, if it is, or from a USB flash drive. In the case of a flash drive, for example, the linuxliveusb program is used here . You can put linux next to Windows, and then put the software you need. Considering that linux is free, and VirtualBox will never work with the same performance as linux itself, plus it will not see some of your peripherals, I see no reason to run into a virtual machine and Windows. On modern disks, there is enough space for such manipulation (you will need up to 25 GB for Ubuntu 17.10). The installation process is convenient, there are no requirements for user skills.

    Alternatively, install linux on a separate USB flash drive (preferably USB 3) or an external hard drive.
