What does this command do and what does -u mean?

    dist-upgrade in addition to performing the upgrade function, also updates dependency packages

    The -u shows a list of updated packages.

    You can learn more about the apt-get command on the man page or here: https://linux.die.net/man/8/apt-get

      To learn about the commands, read the manual page (short "manpage") using the man command.
      For example, to learn about apt-get , type the following command:

       man apt-get

      dist-upgrade in addition to performing the upgrade function, also intelligently handles dependency changes with new package versions;
      apt-get has a smart conflict resolution system and it will, if necessary, attempt to update the most important packages at the expense of less important ones.
      The /etc/apt/sources.list file contains a list of sources for receiving packages from which the package files will be obtained.

      The -u option, in this case, lists all packages that have been updated.
      -u her short entry, --show-upgraded long.
